We can supply Greasy, Sorted, Scoured or Combed wool types over a wide micron range from many different countries of origin. Our specialities are British, Norwegian, Irish, New Zealand and Real Shetland wool.
We offer wool certified for different internationally recognised standards such as GOTS, Nordic Swan and Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex.
Wool usage is not limited to a particular use, it is used in a wide variety of products and not limited to the table below. At Curtis Wool Direct, we supply wool into these main product areas.
Carpets
Wools unique chemical composition makes it the safest of all textile fibres through its inherent fire retardant properties. The fibre is liked a coiled spring, resulting in a natural ability to recover its shape, giving it durability and making it extremely hardwearing. Wool is very easy to clean, it possesses a protective membrane, repelling moisture and dirt and is also a natural stain resister.
Upholstery
Wool (especially British wool) is bulky, hardwearing and elastic, with the ability to retain its shape time and time again. Its fire retardant properties and natural stain resistant properties are especially important in the transport sector.
Bedding
Wools resistance to compression is ideal in a mattress to provide support.
The Hypo-allergenic nature of wool is a natural absorber of toxin and odours that cause irritation to humans. Wool is also resistant to bacteria, mould and fungi.
Thermal insulation is another one of wools inherent insulation properties.
Apparel
Wool has been used to make quality cloth and fashion items for centuries. Wool is able to absorb dyes readily which penetrate deep into the medulla core, resulting in permanent colour changes and improved colour fastness. Wools characteristics help it withstand wear and is also resistant to creasing.
Hand-knitting
The UK has more breeds of sheep than any other country in the world. Each breed has its own unique characteristics, whether they are soft, lustrous, fine or course. Many British wool breeds are naturally coloured so can provide many natural shades for hand-knitting yarns. Wools ability to hold dye also lends itself to the hand-knitting industry.
Insulation
Wool, particularly kempy British wool lends itself to being an effective insulator, as the hollow fibre is able to trap air. It is hypo- allergenic, breathable, temperature regulating and fire resistant, making it the perfect natural insulation product for homes. More recently, it is being used in the food and pharmaceutical industry due to its temperature insulation properties and is 100% biodegradable.
